語源
「romanize」は英語で『Roman（ローマの）』＋生産的接尾辞『-ize』（フランス語・ラテン語・ギリシャ語由来）を組み合わせた語に由来し、『Roman』は『ローマの』を意味しました。
『Roman』はラテン語の『Romanus（ローマの）』に由来します。動詞形成の接尾辞『-ize』は古フランス語・ラテン語・ギリシャ語の派生を経て中英語で用いられ、18–19世紀頃に現代英語の『romanize』が形成されました。
当初は『ローマのようにする』という意味合いでしたが、時間とともに主に『（文字を）ローマ字にする・ローマ字で表す』という専門的な意味に発展しました。
