「wall-eyed」は英語由来で、「wall（壁）」+「eye（目）」という複合語であり、ここでの「wall」は「面の方へ向く」といった古い感覚を反映している。
「wall-eyed」は中英語〜近代英語期に記述的な複合語として発達し、目が外側を向く、あるいは白っぽく見える人や動物を指すのに使われた。のちに魚の名『walleye』にも関連した。
