語源
「germanism」は英語に由来し、語幹の「German（ドイツに関する）」と接尾辞「-ism（慣習・特徴・主義）」の結合から成る。
「German」はラテン語の'Germanus'（ゲルマン民族に関する）に由来し、中英語（例：'Germayn'）を経て現代英語の'German'になった。接尾辞'-ism'はギリシャ語'-ismos'、ラテン語'-ismus'、古仏語'-isme'を経て英語の名詞形成に用いられるようになり、これらが結合して'germanism'が生まれた。
