語源
「prelegal」はラテン語の要素に由来する。接頭辞「prae」（英語の「pre-」を通じて）で「～の前」を意味し、『legalis』（'lex'に由来）で「法律に属する」を意味する。
「pre-」（ラテン語prae）と「legal」（ラテン語legalisを経由した）が結合して近代英語の「prelegal」が形成され、19～20世紀以降、法学や専門文脈で用いられるようになった。
当初は単に「法律の前」を意味していたが、次第に規制や手続きが始まる前の段階を指す法学的・学術的用法として定着した。
