語源
『pedant』はフランス語の『pédant』に由来し、さらにイタリア語の『pedante』にさかのぼる。最終的にはギリシャ語『paidagōgos』（παιδαγωγός）に由来し、そこでは 'pais/paid-' が「子」「子ども」、'agōgos' が「導く人」を意味した。
『pedant』はイタリア語『pedante』やフランス語『pédant』を経て近代英語の『pedant』になり、複数形の『pedants』などの形へと発展した（16-17世紀に英語へ借用）。
当初は「教師」や「教育係」を意味していたが、時を経て「細部や規則に過度にこだわり、学識をひけらかす人」という現在の意味に変化した。
