語源
「pragmatist」はギリシャ語の「pragma」（行為、事柄）に由来し、ラテン語やフランス語を経て英語の形容詞「pragmatic」になり、英語でエージェント接尾辞「-ist」が付けられたものです。
ギリシャ語の「pragma」から派生した「pragmatikos」やフランス語・英語の「pragmatic」を経て、形容詞に「-ist」を付けて現代英語の名詞「pragmatist」になりました。
当初は「行為」や「行動」に関する意味であったが（ギリシャ語の「pragma」）、次第に実用的な行動や結果を重視する意味に変化し、実用主義的な人や思想の支持者を指すようになりました。
