語源
「scholastic」はラテン語の「scholasticus」に由来し、そこではギリシャ語の語根「scholē」が「学校」や「講義」を意味していた。
「scholasticus」は中世ラテン語や古フランス語に入り、のちに英語の形容詞・名詞「scholastic」（集合複数形は「scholastics」）になった。
最初は「学校に属する」や「講義に関する」を意味していたが、次第に「正式な教育・学問に関する」や「スコラ学の学者に関する」といった現代的な意味へと広がった。
