語源
「lightweight」は「light」と「weight」の英語の合成語に由来する。「light」は古英語の「lēoht」から来て「軽い（重くない）」を意味し、「weight」は古英語の「weġht」から来て「重さ、重量」を意味した。
「light」と「weight」が近代英語で結びついて合成語「lightweight」になった。ボクシングの体重階級やその選手を指す名詞用法は19世紀後半に現れ、比喩的に重要性の低い人を指す用法は20世紀初頭に発展した。
当初は「重さが小さい」という文字通りの意味だったが、次第に体重階級の技術的用法に拡張され、さらに比喩的に「重要でない人」「能力の低い人」を意味するようになった。
