語源
「arabesque」はフランス語の単語「arabesque」から英語に取り入れられた。フランス語では「アラブ風のやり方」や「アラブ風の装飾」を指した。
17世紀に英語へはフランス語から入った。フランス語の語はイタリア語の「arabesco」（「アラブ風」の意）に由来し、さらに中世ラテン語/イタリア語で「アラブ」に関係する語の派生である。
元々は「アラブ風（イスラム美術に似た）様式」を意味していたが、次第に特定の装飾図案、バレエの姿勢、装飾的な旋律を持つ楽曲などを指すように意味が広がった。
