語源
「arabesque」はフランス語の『arabesque』に由来し、『arab-』は「アラブ風（アラブ人の様式）」を指し、接尾辞『-esque』は「～風・～様式」という意味である。
英語の'airabesque'はフランス語の『arabesque』から入り、このフランス語はイタリア語の『arabesco』（「アラブ風の」という意味）に由来し、最終的にはアラビア語の『arab（アラブ）』に遡る。
当初は「アラブ風・アラブ様式」を意味していたが、次第に特定の装飾文様、装飾的な短い音楽作品、バレエのポーズなどを指すように広がった。
