語源
「tortoiseshell」は英語に由来し、'tortoise'（カメ）と'shell'（甲羅・殻）を組み合わせた複合語である。
近代英語で複合語として成立し、当初はカメの甲羅を指したが、やがて特定の海亀の甲羅から作られる装飾素材やそのまだら模様を指すようになった。
当初は単にカメの甲羅を意味していたが、次第に装飾用素材やその模様を指す意味に広がった。
