語源
「tortoise-shell」は近代英語で「tortoise」＋「shell」から成る複合語として成立した。
「tortoise」は中英語（例：tortuse）の語形を経て入り，「shell」は古英語の'scell'に由来する。両語が組み合わさり、甲羅やその装飾材料、のちに模様や蝶などにも用いられるようになった。
当初は亀の甲羅そのものを指したが、やがてその甲羅から作る装飾材料（やその模様）を意味するようになり、さらに似た模様を持つ動物にも用いられるようになった。
