語源
「protocanonical」は近代ラテン語の「protocanonicus」に由来し、ギリシャ語の「protos」（最初）と後期ラテン語／中世ラテン語の「canonicus」（ギリシャ語の「kanon」＝規準・標準が語源）から成る。
「protocanonical」は教会ラテン語で「protocanonicus」として形成され（中世ラテン語）、'proto-'と'canonicus'の結合形として近代期に英語に取り入れられた。
当初は「正典の一覧の中で最初・初期のもの」を意味していたが、時を経て「初期の正典に属する／初期の正典的な」という現在の意味（時に宗教以外の比喩的用法も含む）に発展した。
