語源
「noncanonical」はラテン語の接頭辞「non-」（「〜でない」の意）と「canonical」から成り、後者はギリシャ語の「kanōn」を経て後期ラテン語の「canonicus」に由来する。『kanōn』は「規則」「定規」を意味した。
「canonical」は中世ラテン語の「canonicus」や古フランス語の「canonique」を経て中英語で「canonical」となった。近代英語では否定の生産的接頭辞「non-」が付されて「noncanonical」となった。
元々「canonical」は（特に宗教における）正典や規則に関する意味だったが、次第に「標準的・権威ある」の意味に拡張されたため、「noncanonical」は「標準・公式の規則に従わない」を意味するようになり、技術的用法も持つに至った。
