語源
「pluralist」は英語で「plural（複数）」と接尾辞「-ist（〜する人）」を結合して作られた語に由来する。『plural』はラテン語『pluralis』、さらに『plus』（より多い）が語源である。
「plural」はラテン語『pluralis』（『より多い』を意味する『plus』から）に由来し、古フランス語やラテン語を経て英語に入った。英語では人を表す接尾辞『-ist』が加わって『pluralist』が形成された。
もともとはラテン語の「より多い」という意味に関連していたが、時間を経て『複数の共存を支持する人』という現代的な意味（社会的・政治的・宗教的多元主義の支持者）に発展し、教会史ではかつて『複数の聖職位を兼ねる者』という古い意味もあった。
