語源
「lenticular」はラテン語、特に『lenticula』（『lens』の小辞）に由来し、『lent-／lens』は「レンズ」や「レンズのような種（レンズ豆）」を意味し、接尾辞は「…に関する」を作る。
『lenticular』はラテン語の『lenticula』から派生したNeo-Latin/ラテン語の『lenticularis』を経て英語に入り、科学・技術用語としてレンズ形のものを表す語となった。
元は「レンズ豆（小さなレンズ形の種）」を指していたが、次第に「レンズ形の」を意味するようになり、現在では光学・地質・印刷などの分野で用いられる。
