語源
「double-faced」は現代英語の複合語で、'double'（2倍の、二重の）＋'face'（顔・表面）から成る。
'double'は古フランス語'double'（ラテン語'duplus'から）に由来し、'face'は古フランス語'face'（ラテン語'facies'から）に由来する。これらを組み合わせて英語で『二つの顔をもつ』を表す語が生まれ、やがて比喩的用法が発達した。
最初は文字どおり『2つの顔や面を持つ』という意味だったが、次第に『偽善的で裏表がある』という比喩的な意味が一般的になった。
