語源
「casuistical」は中世ラテン語の'casuisticus'に由来し、ラテン語の'casus'は「事例／場合」を意味した。
中世ラテン語の'casuisticus'から変化し、後期ラテン語や古仏語（casuistique）を経て英語の'casuistry'や形容詞'casuistical'となった。
当初は道徳神学における特定の「事例」に関する論法を指していたが、時とともに意味が広がり「詭弁的・細かいこだわりのある論法」を指すことが多くなった。
