語源
「casuistic」は中世ラテン語の「casuisticus」に由来し、最終的にはラテン語の「casus」（事例・場合）と形容詞接尾辞「-istic」に基づく。
「casuistic」は名詞「casuistry」（中世ラテン語の「casuistica」およびラテン語「casus」『事例』に由来）を経て英語の形容詞として成立し、17–18世紀から使用された。
当初は「事例に基づく道徳的思考に関する」を意味したが、時間とともに「巧妙だが詭弁的・ごまかしの多い理屈を用いる」という否定的な意味も帯びるようになった。
