語源
「barnacle」は中英語・アンゴ＝ノルマン語に由来し、最終的には中世ラテン語の『bernacula』に由来する。語はフジツボや、フジツボから生じると考えられた『ガン（barnacle goose）』に結び付けられていた。
『bernacula』（中世ラテン語）から古フランス語・アンゴ＝ノルマン語の『berniecle／bernacle』を経て、中英語の『barnacle』になり、現代英語に至った。
当初は貝類（と中世の信念ではそこから生まれるとされたガン）を指していたが、次第に現代では定着性の甲殻類（フジツボ）と、比喩的には『しがみつくもの』を意味するようになった。
