「cling-on」は英語に由来し、動詞'cling'と前置詞'on'から成る。'cling'（古英語 'clingan'）は「しっかりと掴む」を意味し、'on'（古英語 'on'）は「～の上・～に」を意味した。
『cling』は古英語の'clingan'から現代英語の'cling'へと残った。名詞の複合語『cling-on』は動詞＋前置詞の構造から近代英語（主に20世紀の英国）で口語的に生まれた。
