語源
『antithyroid』はギリシャ語と新ラテン語の要素に由来する。接頭辞『anti-』はギリシャ語で『反対・〜に対して』を意味し、『thyroid』はギリシャ語『thyreoeides』（『盾状の』）から新ラテン語を経て来ている。
ギリシャ語の『thyreoeides』（『盾状の』）が新ラテン語の『thyreoideus』になり、英語で『thyroid』となった。現代医療英語では『anti-』を付けて『antithyroid』という複合語が形成された。
もともとは『反対・盾状の（甲状腺）』という構成要素の意味だったが、現在では『甲状腺の働きを抑える』という医療的な意味で安定している。
