語源
「thyroid」は新ラテン語の「thyreoideus」に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語の「thyreoeidēs」から来ている。ここで「thyreos」は「盾」を、「-oeidēs」は「...のような」を意味した。
ギリシャ語の「thyreoeidēs」は新ラテン語の「thyreoideus」に入り、18–19世紀の英語の医学用語として「thyroid」となった。当初は甲状軟骨の「盾状の形」を指したが、次第に甲状腺を指すようになった。
当初は「盾状の形」を意味していたが、時間とともに主に首の甲状腺やそれに関連するもの（ホルモン、疾患）を指すようになった。
