語源
「antimeric」は接頭辞の「anti-」（「反対」を意味）と幹の「mer-/ -mere」（ギリシャ語の'meros'「部分」）を組み合わせて現代に作られた語に由来し、「anti-」は「反対」、「meros」は「部分」を意味した。
英語の'antimeric'は名詞'antimere'（新ラテン語／近代ラテン語でギリシャ語の要素から形成）に形容詞語尾'-ic'を付けて発達した。ギリシャ語の'meros'（μέρος）が「部分」の語幹になり、'anti-'はギリシャ語のἀντί「反対」に遡る。
当初は「反対の部分」を意味する語として作られたが、解剖学では「対応する反対側の部分」に、立体化学では「反対（鏡像）配置」に関する専門的な用法として使われるようになった。
