語源
「animality」は後期ラテン語の『animalitas』に由来し、さらにラテン語『animal』、その語根『anima』（「息・生命・魂」）にさかのぼる。
『animalitas』はフランス語『animalité』となり、近世英語期に英語『animality』として定着した。
当初は「理性・精神に対する動物的な本質・生命」を表したが、のちに「（行動面での）獣性・肉欲」という含意も帯びるようになった。
