語源
「animadversion」はラテン語「animadversio（-n-）」に由来し、動詞「animadvertere」（「animus（心）」＋「ad-（〜へ）」＋「vertere（向ける）」）に基づく語である。
ポスト古典ラテン語「animadversio」から学術語として初期近代英語に借用され、現代英語の「animadversion」となった。
当初は「心を向ける行為；注目・所見」および「非難・処罰」を意味したが、時代とともに「辛口の指摘・非難」という意味へと狭まっていった。
