語源
「aniconism」はギリシャ語に由来し、否定の「an-」（〜でない）と「eikōn」（像、似姿）、さらに「〜主義・慣行」を表す接尾辞「-ism」から成る。
「aniconism」は英語の形容詞「aniconic」（ギリシャ語「an-」＋「eikōn」がラテン語・フランス語を経て英語「icon」となった系譜）に、抽象名詞の接尾辞「-ism」を付けて形成され、現代英語の「aniconism」になった。
当初は「図像がない状態」を意味していたが、のちに「特に宗教文脈で具象イメージを避ける教義・慣行」という現代的意味へと発展した。
