語源
「anchor」は古英語の「æncor／ancor」に由来し、これらは古ノルド語や古フランス語を経て後期ラテン語の「ancora」からきている。
「anchor」は後期ラテン語の「ancora」からギリシャ語の「ankura（ἄγκυρα）＝『かぎ・鉤』に遡る。古英語（『æncor／ancor』）を経て現代英語の「anchor」になった。
最初は『かぎ・曲がった道具』を意味していたが、次第に船を固定するための重り（いかり）を指すようになり、『固定する・留める』という中心的な意味は残っている。
