語源
「Americanism」は英語由来で、形容詞「American」（『America』＝探検家アメリゴ・ヴェスプッチに由来）と接尾辞「-ism」（ギリシャ語「-ismos」→ラテン語「-ismus」）から成る。ここで『America』はアメリゴにちなむ大陸名を指し、「-ism」は慣習・体系・特徴を意味した。
『America』は探検家アメリゴ・ヴェスプッチの名前（イタリア語Amerigo、ラテン語化してAmericus）に由来し、16世紀初頭の地図製作者らが大陸名として用いた。『American』は「アメリカに関する」を意味する形容詞として発達し、接尾辞「-ism」を付けて19世紀に「Americanism」が形成され、語・文化・政治・宗教の各意味を帯びるようになった。
当初はアメリゴに由来する地名と特徴を示す接尾辞の組合せで「アメリカに特有のもの」を意味したが、やがて語法や文化的性質、政治的忠誠、特定の宗教論争など複数の意味へと広がった。
