「anti-Americanism」は接頭辞「anti-」（ギリシャ語anti-「反」）、形容詞「American」（探検家アメリゴ・ヴェスプッチの名前に由来する「America」から）、および接尾辞「-ism」（教義・行為を示すギリシャ語/ラテン語由来）から形成されている。
ギリシャ語の「anti-」とアメリゴ・ヴェスプッチの名に由来する「America」が英語で「anti-American」を生み、それに名詞化する接尾辞「-ism」を付けることで近代英語の「anti-Americanism」になった。19–20世紀に米国の影響力に関する政治論議の中で用いられるようになった。
