語源
『unction』はラテン語の『unctio』に由来し、そこでは『ungere』（油を塗ること）を意味した。
『unction』は古フランス語の『onction』や中英語の『unctioun/unction』を経て現代英語の『unction』になった。
当初は「塗油の行為や塗油に使う油」を意味したが、次第に「軟膏・塗り薬」や比喩的な「過度で不誠実な誠実さ（ぬめりのあるへつらい）」という意味も帯びるようになった。
