語源
「turn-on」は現代英語に由来し、動詞「turn」と副詞／前置詞「on」を結合してできた複合語で、句動詞「turn on」を名詞化したもの（20世紀に作動や口語的意味で使われるようになった）。
「turn」は古フランス語の'torner'/'tourner'（回す）に由来し、さらにラテン語の'tornare'（ろくろで回す）にさかのぼる。「on」は古英語の'on'（〜の上で、〜に）に由来する。句の組合せ「turn on」は中英語から近代英語で発展し、後にハイフンでつなぎ名詞化された。
