語源
「tan^-1」の表記は口語の「arctan」に対応し、これは英語の「arc tangent（弧のタンジェント）」という語句に由来する。'tangent'はラテン語の'tangens'（動詞'tangere'からの現在分詞）で「触れる」を意味する単語から来ている。
「tangent」は中世ラテン語や古フランス語を経て数学用語として入ってきた。'arc tangent'はあるタンジェント値に対応する弧（角）を指すために英語で用いられ、やがて'arctan'に縮約され、逆三角関数の記法としてtan^-1が18〜19世紀ごろに普及した。
元々は「接する線」を指していたが、次第に三角関数の名称となり、'arc tangent'は与えられた値のタンジェントになる角を意味するようになった。現代では逆関数（arctan, tan^-1）として用いられている。
