「spermism」はギリシャ語を経てニューラテン語・英語に由来する: 接頭辞の『sperm-』はギリシャ語『sperma（種）』に由来し、語尾の『-ism』は『主義・説』を示す。
ギリシャ語の『sperma』はニューラテン語・近代英語の語根『sperm-』（例: 'spermato-','sperm'）になり、そこに『-ism』を付けて『spermism』が形成された。用語は17〜19せいきの生物学的議論で現れた。
