語源
「epigenesis」はギリシャ語に由来し、具体的には「epí」＋「génesis」から来ており、「epí」は「〜の上に／〜のあとで」を、「génesis」は「起源／誕生」を意味した。
「epigenesis」はギリシャ語のἐπιγένεσις（epigénesis）に由来し、中世ラテン語・新ラテン語で'epigenesis'として採用され、英語にも同形で入り、生物学的・哲学的な意味を持つようになった。
当初は一般に「後から生じること／形成されること」を意味したが、次第に生物学での『構造が形成される発生』という専門用語となり、現代ではエピジェネティックな過程や地質学的な二次的変化まで含む広い用法に拡張された。
