語源
「neuro-」はギリシャ語の「neûron（神経、腱）」に由来し、「diversity」はラテン語の「diversitas（diversus：異なる）」に由来する言葉の結合である。
「neurodiversity」は1990年代後半に造語され（オーストラリアの社会学者ジュディ・シンガーに帰されることが多い）、2000年代に自閉症の当事者運動などを通じて広く普及し、社会・教育・臨床の場で一般的な用語になった。
当初は神経的特性が人々の間で自然に変異するという考えを指していたが、次第にその記述的概念に加え、受容や配慮を求める社会的・政治的運動の名称としても用いられるようになった。
