語源
「neurotypicality」はギリシャ語とラテン語を経由する英語に由来し、特にギリシャ語の'neuron'（神経）と、'typical'に由来する名詞化接尾辞'-ity'から構成されており、'neuron'は「神経」を、'-ity'は「状態・性質」を意味した。
「neurotypicality」は形容詞の'neurotypical'に名詞化接尾辞'-ity'が付いて変化し、20世紀後半に臨床やコミュニティの言説の中で名詞として現れ、現代英語の単語になった。
当初は主に「典型的な神経の状態」を記述する意味だったが、時間とともに「神経的逸脱と対比される社会学的・アイデンティティ的な意味」を帯びるようになった。
