語源
『hermitage』は古フランス語の単語『hermitage』に由来し、『hermite』は「隠遁者」を意味し、接尾辞『-age』は「場所」や「結果」を示した。
『hermitage』は中世ラテン語の『hermitagium』（または後期ラテン語の『hermitaticum』）や古フランス語の『hermitage』を経て、現代英語の『hermitage』になった。
当初は「隠遁者の住まい」を意味していたが、時とともに「人里離れた隠れ家」一般や固有名詞としての『エルミタージュ（美術館）』といった用法にも広がった。
