語源
「cross-eyed」は英語で「cross」と「eye」の合成語に由来する。'cross'は古英語の 'cros'（さらにラテン語 'crux' に由来）、'eye' は古英語の 'ēage' に由来する。
『cross』は向く・逆らうという意味の派生語義を発展させ、『eye』と組み合わさって近代英語で『目が内側に寄る』を表す形容詞 'cross-eyed' が生まれた。'eye' は古英語から形が大きく変わらなかった。
当初は文字どおり『目が交差している・内側に向いている』ことを指したが、時代とともに『見すぎて目が疲れる・混乱する』という比喩的な意味も持つようになった。
