語源
「automacy」は英語に由来し、『automatic』＋名詞化接尾辞『-acy』から形成され、最終的には「自己」を意味するギリシャ語『autos』に由来する。
『automacy』は近代英語（19～20世紀）において『privacy』や『democracy』の類推で形成され、『automatic』はフランス語・ラテン語を経てギリシャ語『autos』（「自己」）に由来する。
当初は単に『自己で作動する状態』を指したが、次第に機械的・自己作動的な意味と、意識的制御なしに行われる心理的行為の両方の意味を持つようになった。
