語源
「apocalyptism」はギリシャ語の語『apokalypsis』に由来し、接頭辞の『apo-』（離れて・外へ）と『kalyptō』（覆う・隠す）が合わさった語で、元は「明らかにすること・啓示」を意味した。英語では接尾辞『-ism』を付けて信念・主義を表す名詞が作られた。
『apokalypsis』は後期ラテン語の『apocalypsis』を経て古フランス語・中英語の『apocalypse/ apocalips』となり、現代英語では接尾辞『-ism』を付けて『apocalyptism』のような「主義・信念」を表す語が形成された。
