「eschatological」は近代ラテン語・ギリシャ語に由来し，特にギリシャ語の『eschatologia』（ἐσχατολογία）から来ており，『eschatos』は「最後の」を，『-logia』は「学び・談話」を意味した。
『eschatological』はギリシャ語の『eschatologia』からラテン語（中世ラテン語）を経て神学用語として英語の『eschatology』に入り，そこから形容詞形『eschatological』が英語で発達した。
