語源
「apocalypticism」はギリシャ語の『apokalypsis』に由来し、『apo-』は『離れて』を、『kalyptō』に関連する語は『覆う』を意味し、つまり『暴かれること』『啓示』を表した。
『apocalypticism』は後期ラテン語の『apocalypticus』やラテン語の『apocalypsis』、形容詞『apocalyptic』を経て英語に入り、名詞としての『apocalypticism』は後に思想・運動を指す語として発達した。
もともとは『暴かれること』や『啓示』を意味していたが、時代を経て終末や大変動に関する啓示と結びつき、『差し迫った黙示や破局を信じること』という現代的意味に変化した。
