『apocalypse』はギリシャ語の『apokalypsis』に由来し、『apo-』は「離れて・外へ」を、『kalypsis』（'kalyptō'に由来）は「覆い（おおうこと）」を意味した。
『apokalypsis』は後期ラテン語の『apocalypsis』を経て、古フランス語・中英語（例：'apocalips'）に入り、最終的に現代英語の『apocalypse』となった。
当初は「覆いを取り除くこと・啓示」を意味したが、聖書の黙示録の影響などで次第に「世界の終わり」や「壊滅的な破滅」を指すようになった。
