語源
「cataclysm」はギリシャ語の『kataklysmos』に由来し、『kata-』は「下へ」を、『klyzein／klysmos』は「洗う（洗い流すこと）／洗い流されるもの」を意味した。
『kataklysmos』は後期ラテン語の『cataclysmus』に入り、古フランス語・近代フランス語の『cataclysme』を経て英語の『cataclysm』になった。
当初は主に「大洪水」を指したが、時代とともに「大規模な破壊的出来事・激変」を意味するように広がった。
