語源
「apache」はスペイン語の単語「apache」に由来し、その語源はおそらくズニ語（あるいは近縁のプエブロ諸語）の『apachu』に遡り、『敵』または『戦う者たち』を意味したとされる。
「apache」はスペイン語の「apache」から変化し、フランス語に取り入れられて俗語として『乱暴者』の意味を持つようになり、最終的に現代英語の「apache」として定着した。その後、AH-64ヘリコプターやソフトウェア（Apache HTTP Server）などの名称にも用いられた。
当初はアパッチ族の構成員を指したが、時代とともにフランス語で『乱暴者』という俗的な意味が生じ、さらに軍事機械やソフトウェアの名称としても使われるようになった。
