語源
「server」は中英語および古フランス語に由来し、動詞「serve（仕える／提供する）」に動作者を表す接尾辞「-er」が付いてできた語であり、動詞は最終的にラテン語の「servire（仕える／提供する）」に由来する。
「server」は中英語の『servere』のような形（古フランス語の『servir』の影響を受ける）から変化して、現代英語の「server」になった。
当初は「（人としての）仕える人／提供する人」を意味していたが、時代とともに比喩的に拡張され、機器やプログラムの『サービスを提供するもの（サーバー）』という意味も生じた。
