「antiromanticist」は現代英語に由来する複合語で、接頭辞『anti-』（ギリシャ語 'anti'：～に反対）と名詞『romanticist』（『Romantic』＋接尾辞『-ist』）から成る。

ギリシャ語の『anti-』と、フランス語 'romantique' を起源とする英語の 'romantic'（中世ラテン語・古フランス語の影響あり）が結び付いて 'romanticist' が生まれ、現代英語でこれらが結合して『antiromanticist』となった。

当初は歴史的なロマン主義運動に対する反対を指すことが多かったが、次第に感傷的・ロマンチックな態度全般への反対を示す意味に広がった。
