語源
「Yankee-like」は名詞「Yankee」と「〜のような」を意味する古英語由来の接尾辞「like」から成る。『Yankee』は17世紀に英語に入った語である。
『Yankee』はオランダ語の人名『Janke』（『Jan』の指小形）などに由来すると考えられ、新アムステルダム（後のニューヨーク）周辺で使われた。後に他の植民者によって用いられ、やがて『（特に米国北部の）アメリカ人』を指す語となった。接尾辞『like』は古英語の『līc』に由来し「〜のような」の意味に発展した。これらが結びついて現代英語の『Yankee-like』ができた。
当初『Yankee』は地域的・侮蔑的な呼び名であったが、やがて中立的・記述的な『（主に北部の）アメリカ人』という意味に広がり、派生語『Yankee-like』は『ヤンキーに似た』を意味するようになった。
