語源
「N-acyl」は元素記号の「N」（窒素を示す）と語「acyl」の結合に由来する。『acyl』はフランス語の「acyle」や新ラテン語の「acylus」に由来し、『acid（酸）』と接尾辞『-yl（基を示す）』から作られた語である。
「N-acyl」は19世紀の化学命名法で、『acyl』の前に『N』を置いて窒素への置換を示す表記として生まれ、有機化学の文献や教科書で標準化された。
当初『acyl』は酸由来のラジカルや基一般を指したが、次第に『N-acyl』は窒素原子に結合したアシル基（N置換アシル誘導体）を特に指すようになった。
